Pacuare Lodge Facts

Pacuare Lodge Cited as Exemplary Tourism Practice

The Pacuare Lodge has been carefully planned and constructed to effect a minimum of impact on the river/rainforest site where it is located, and is accessible only by boat or hike.

All building materials were rafted in or purchased from local inhabitants.

No trees were cut on our site of primary rainforest to build the bungalows and lodge. Wood for the bungalows was purchased from a sustainable reforestation project operated by and benefitting small local farmers.

Roofs for the bungalows are constructed with palm leaves, which are purchased from and installed by the Cabecar Indians living in the area who use their traditional methods of sustainable harvest and construction style.

For obvious ecological reasons, we do not use a generator to produce electricity. Guests are provided with candles for their bungalows, and the main lodge is lighted with gas lanterns at night. Cooking is done with gas, which is rafted in.

A sewage system with individual septic tanks for each bungalow has been designed and constructed to process wastes in an environmentally friendly way. Garbage is separated and biodegradable wastes are processed on site, while the small amount of other wastes is rafted out.

Food preparation is one of the areas in which we receive our most effusive praise. Our guides are trained by professional chefs and menus avoid red meats, favoring chicken dishes and variety of vegetables, including organically grown minivegetables.

Aventuras Naturales was the first adventure travel company to purchase parcels of primary forest in this area solely for the purpose of conservation. Near the site of our eco-lodge we have close to 30 hectares of primary rainforest that was bought because it was in danger of being cleared. Because our goal is preservation of untouched virgin rainforest, no visitors are allowed into this area.

We employ indigenous people both permanently on our lodge management staff and by contract for activities like maintenance of the palm-thatched roofs.

Aventuras Naturales has an ongoing Community Support Program to share the benefits of responsible tourism with the local community.
