Following is a sample itinerary: Day
One: Monteverde Day Two: Biking toward Arenal and Canopy Tour After breakfast, we will begin biking from Monteverde through Santa Elena, continuing until we arrive at the town of Tilarán. Here we will stop for a relaxing lunch and then continue driving toward Lake Arenal (the largest of Costa Rica's lakes). We'll pass along the western shore, making our way past the town of New Arenal. From there, it is a short trip to Lake Coter, where we arrive at our destination, the Eco-Lodge, where you can enjoy the lodge's canopy tour. This exciting tour has four platforms, ranging from 19 to 25 meters above the forest floor. You begin by climbing a wooden ladder (with safety harnesses) up to the first platform, then glide along traverse cables from platform to platform. The experience ends with a modified rappel down to the ground. Biking time: four hours (with the option of continuing further). Difficulty: moderate-difficult. Day Three: Biking around Arenal Lake Enjoy a plentiful breakfast at the lodge, and then begin Biking down to New Arenal and over dirt roads along the southern shore of the lake. We will skirt obstacles and cross small creeks until we arrive at the world-famous Tabacón Resort and Spa, where you can relax in the soothing hot springs and enjoy a delicious lunch. During the day’s biking trek you will be afforded a magnificent view of the lake, as well as the impressive Arenal Volcano. We will drive back to San José, arriving in the early evening. Biking time: four hours. Difficulty: moderate-difficult. Day Four: Biking to the Irazú and Turrialba Volcanoes We will pick you up at your hotel in the early morning and begin our journey up the lush green slopes of Irazú Volcano. You will have ample chance to admire the breathtaking views of Cartago, Costa Rica’s capital city in the colonial era. Our destination is the summit of Irazú Volcano, rising 11,260 feet above sea level. The volcano has been dormant since its last eruption in 1963, except for a few tremors in 1991. On a clear day you can see both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. After entering the national park to view the crater, we will drive you down approximately three miles, where you will start Biking on an unpaved road that will take you to the lower slopes of the Turrialba Volcano. We'll then descend to the small town of San Antonio, and continue over a paved road to the Turrialba Valley. The Biking expedition will end in the quaint town of Turrialba, home to one of the most important tropical agriculture research centers in the world. Biking time: four hours (with option to lengthen). Difficulty: moderate. Day Five: Biking from Tapantí to the Orosi Valley After breakfast, we'll begin biking along the border of the Tapantí National Park, heading toward the Orosi Valley, site of one of Costa Rica’s first European settlements. Numerous occasions will arise for birdwatching in this area, home to the beautiful quetzal and other colorful species. We'll have lunch in the area and return to San José in the late afternoon. A farewell dinner is scheduled for the evening. Biking time: five hours. Difficulty: moderate-difficult. We
