Explore the essence of the cloud forest at Monteverde, where you will encounter wind-sculpted woodlands on exposed ridges, protected cove forests, with majestically towering trees decorated with orchids, bromeliads, ferns, vines and thick mosses, and swamp forests, as well as crystal-clear streams tumbling along, with bubbling rapids and singing waterfalls. Three days in Monteverde gives you ample opportunity to explore all seven of the trails inside the forest reserve, leading more than six miles through the forest. No more than 120 visitors are allowed on the trails at any given time, to preserve the quiet beauty and serenity of the forest.

The 26,000-acre Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve is inhabited by more than 100 species of mammals, 120 species of reptiles and amphibians and 2,500 species of plants, including 420 different kinds of orchids. Spectacular wildlife complements the lavish plant life at Monteverde, including jaguars, ocelots, Bare-necked Umbrella birds and the elusive and mystical Resplendent Quetzal. You'll also have an opportunity to admire hundreds of colorful winged creatures at the Monteverde Butterfly Garden.

Optional Tours in Monteverde:

The Original Canopy Tour: The Original Canopy Tour starts with a short guided hike through a private cloud forest reserve. Then climb up a ladder to the first platform, located about eight meters above the ground, where a series of cables connecting the trees awaits you. After soaring through the treetops on horizontal traverse lines and treetops platforms, you will rappel down to the forest floor. Hike another 50 meters and you will find a spectacular climb up a rope ladder inside the hollow trunk of a huge Strangler Fig tree. Dangling 22 meters above the ground, an eight-meter-long walkway is an unbeatable vantage point for observing the surrounding rainforest. Continue your tour from platform to platform, assisted by our expert guides, and finally a second rappel that takes you back down to the forest floor.

Price per person: US$43

Monteverde SkyWalk: This new attraction offers an opportunity to explore the forest canopy in a safe and easy manner, walking over a simple system through the tropical jungle on seven suspension bridges, which crisscross deep canyons at the level of the treetops. The longest bridge is about 200 meters (656 feet) in length.

Price per person: US$34

Monteverde Sky Trek: This is a system of three platforms suspended above the ground in the midst of tree boughs. Zip lines attached from one platform to another allow you to slide across them with the use of special equipment. A suspended bridge, 90 meters (300 feet) long and 22 meters (66 feet) high, provides an excellent view of the inner forest. An observation platform above the canopy offers visitors a 360-degree panoramic view of the lowlands of Guanacaste, San Carlos and Puntarenas.

Price per person: US$34
