Birds of Costa Rica

An impressive 870 species of birds have been recorded in Costa Rica. And while most tourists will probably never see the Cocos Island Finch or other endemic species, they may very well see a colorful toucan or a turquoise-browed motmot during their stay. Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge in the northern zone and Palo Verde National Park in the heart of Guanacaste are excellent places to see huge flocks of migratory and nesting aquatic birds. Carara National Park, near Jacó Beach, has the big colorful species sought by tourists — toucans and scarlet macaws — as does the more remote Corcovado National Park. Monteverde and San Gerardo de Dota are good areas to glimpse the elusive resplendent quetzal.
